HAha, I loved this so much
just stumbled on this; these pop quizzes are always fun, listening is learning. But above all, your musicianship and range is phenomenal, I do so enjoy hearing you play, so don't stop
Thank you so much! Will do indeed. I truly appreciate that.
yay!!! I finally got one right!! I found the guitar #2 slightly more muted, especially in the upper register, but with a clear attack. Guitar #1 had a less aggressive attack, but more sparkle and resonance. I think mahogany top and rounded shoulders were a factor. Sound-wise, I don't hear one being $1200 superior, so that would leave it to playability. -- Great comparison.... love the playing on these!
Great review and playing! I'm considering buying a 1980 FG375s that looks to be in imaculate condition...
Nice guitar. I own three Sigmas from the early AMI Collection, means with the old Martin like brand decal and rosewood fretboards and saddles. The first one brought me back to guitar playing in 2013 after a long break of many years, it's a OOOMC-15E that I bought new in local store in Hamburg Germany. Has a very nice flaming grain on top and the sound is very middy and balanced, like it should be on a full mahogany. The 2nd is my take along guitar, a OMM-ST, it sounds very full and open for an OM non solid, similar to an Eastman E1OM. 3rd is a DM12E, a Dreadnoght 12-String. And there is no belly on top after years, like on much more expensive 12 Strings I've seen before. Sound is also very full and rich. The last both were from used market for under 200 €/$. A steal for that sound. :-)
Great craftsmanship, very nice woods and voicing. You made that piece sing Lucas, like always. :-) Very nice guitar.
Hey Lucas, nice comparison. I was quite shure, that I heard the Martin as guitar no1. The fuller sound and the woody deeper basses. But luckily you lifted the secret to my pleasure and it was the Eastman (again). Still the most surprising brand for me. Meanwhile I own three of them my own. E1D, E2D and A122-2CE. Maybe there will be aanother E3OME or AC222CE in the future, cause of the interesting Ovangkol sound I'd like to get. Kind regards from northern germany :)
Not much difference in sound considering one has a mahogany top. Without switching back and forth between sound samples I could not really detect a difference. I also suspect your playing makes every guitar sound good. Martin Plec their necks on all US built guitars. A Plec job is $200US at Sweetwater.
Nice video, I own both the old and new reissue Ranger 6, what I can say is that in term of construction, the newer is far ahead, great finish also... both are built like a tank, they sound very similar though the reissue is louder... they weigh about the same and have the same feeling in hand as long as identical strings are used... Those guitar will never need a neck reset as you mentioned, it's a big +...action as low as it can be.... made for strumming, they excel in that regard... cheers
Cool that you have experience with both the new and old ranger. I have never tried one of the reissue guitars as even the used ones are hard to come by here in Canada. Thanks for filling me in though on what to expect. Makes sense as in my opinion Guitar construction has generally gotten more refined overtime. Of course something special about vintage guitars though. Thank you so much for watching and I appreciate you commenting on the video.
@@LucasHaneman that's correct, back then, cheap guitars were poorly made, but nowadays thanks for the use of CNC machines, laser cuts, hydraulic jigs and so on, they became good, even a cheap guitar is decent, and "made in China" is no more that junk it was 10 years ago. And I totally agreed with the fact that old guitars have that something special.... In the 70's The Rangers were better made than most other cheap shovels. Have a great day.
So haven't seen the reveal, they both sounded sweet cap dothed to your playing🕶 I thought guitar number 2 sounded ever so slightly warmer on the finger style and sounded like it was easier to play with the pick
Right you are. Guitar number two was the Martin so A little easier to play. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
I did pick correctly. I use to own a 000-15 Martin and got rid of it because I didn’t like the neck, and frankly I tired of the all mahogany sound. I’m very much considering the Eastman E1 OM special. It’s all your fault, Lucas, for turning me in the direction of Eastman guitars.
I just bought an Eastman E1OM Special and it's really great. Amazing for the price. I greatly prefer the sound to the non-special one, which I don't like at all. (I briefly owned it, as well as the E2OM). TC top makes a big difference, and the gloss finish is very premium.
Thanks for tuning in guys! I’ve only briefly played one of the specials so far but man it was sweet! I’ll have to do a review sometime soon on the channel. Thanks to both of you for watching and I’m sorry, but not sorry for making you an Eastman addict haha 👍🏻
Lucas, we enjoy these pop quizzes you challenge us with; i own both a Martin and an Eastman so i might be expected to discern between the two; during the enjoyable video above, i pick no1 is the Eastman and no2 is Martin, but what do I know? My Eastman e3OM is great fun to play, projects well, great sustain and costs about a tenth of what my wonderful Martin is valued at now
Super cool that you have some insider first-hand perspective with both brands. I will say you were 100% correct with your assumption. I hope you continue to enjoy both guitars, and thanks so much for watching!
Before I watch where you say which guitar was which, I’ll guess that no.2 was the Martin. Slightly fuller sound finger style, much fuller when picked. Now I’ll return to your video.
You choose…..wisely! Congrats and thanks for watching!
I lean towards #2 being the martin. I was expecting the Martin to be a bit warmer and less bright therefore I thought I should be able to tell based on that alone, but I could not. I could not hear a $1200 difference. I was not at all sure which was which. I ultimately chose thinking the Martin should sound at least a little better and #2 sounded just that little bit better. I have always heard great things about Eastman guitars. They seem like great value instruments. Cheers Luc
Thank you so much for watching and congrats on choosing correctly! They are both pretty special to play and I feel lucky to have been able to showcase them both!
Yeah the Martin sounds way better to me. I’m not the one to ask about value perception though, given my penchant for “lawyer wood”. Lol! I haven’t even looked at my other guitars besides the even more insane acoustic since the Collings came to live with me. Officially spoiled.
For sure. I’m blessed to have a couple of really nice acoustic guitars in my arsenal by small builders and indeed there is no comparison. That said I am happy to have my Eastman for certain occasions, like this past Sunday when I played an outdoor festival and it was so Hot that the power went out. I love/really prefer to play my nice acoustics, but I wouldn’t want to put them through that kind of torture. This is a lesson I’ve learned the hard way. So happy that you are loving that new Collings!
@@LucasHaneman Yeah a “beater” guitar is amust have definitely.
Good old inflation. The balloon just keeps inflating until it's pop.
Too true!
Best video I could find of the amp. Seems to be you tweaked a lot on the software of the Boss. I'm wondering about buying the Stage version and you video is very helpful. Thanks for the video and the good playing. Greetings 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼.
Thanks so much for those kind words! I really appreciate it. FYI, I did no tweaking with the software, just twiddle the knobs a lot until I got the desired sound I was looking for. Thanks again for checking out the video and hope you have a great one!
@@LucasHaneman Just shows the enviable refined sense of taste of your ear...👌🏼
Does this guitar have the thin U-shaped neck?
You shaped yes, but the neck size is alluding me as I shot this video a couple of years ago. I think it was more medium, as I don’t remember it feeling particularly small, but I am really not sure. I do know that this was my favourite guitar I demoed in the store that day and I don’t usually like, really small necks but I know all of that is subjective.
I bought an E6OM today to a guy who was selling it in my city in france, first I was a bit reluctant because I wanted a big name written on the headstock, but after seeing your video i wanted to give it a try :). when I opened the case I have been visually impressed by the beauty of this guitar. then I played a few chords and it was enough I bought the guitar lol I agree the mahogany on the back looks fantastic! your playing is fantastic too btw! all the best for the future! :)
Sounds like you found a great guitar. I’m still really enjoying this one three years after making the video. I totally understand the big name on the headstock mentality. I was a victim of this for a long time too. Thanks to companies like Eastman, though I am much more into the feel of the guitar and the sound of the guitar these days. The name of the headstock Isn’t such a big deal to me after all. I’m glad to hear you had a good experience and I hope you continue to enjoy that Eastman Guitar for many years! Glad to have helped with the decision. Thank you so much for watching and I appreciate you sharing your story here.! Cheers from Canada
I really enjoy your videos, Lucas. Thanks for posting them, they're really helpful to me.
You know, that means a lot to me! Sometimes these videos can take a while to ponder or to put together, so I appreciate that you’ve gotten something from them. Thanks a bunch for tuning in and for your kind words!
@@LucasHaneman My pleasure. Your review of the Rivera M60 helped me actually buy one. Good stuff and the playing is awesome, as well.
Oh wow cool! I think that was the first review I ever did on this channel. Ancient review but I used to enjoy that amp big time when I owned it. So many great sounds available.
Both guitars sound great!! I really would like the E6 or E10 om to add to my collection but I'm a lefty player and I waited too long as Eastman has discontinued a lot of their models in left handed versions. I was lucky enough to stumble upon an E40 in lefty . 1 of only 3 made in left-handed.
The E-40 must be a very nice guitar. The highest grade I’ve played from Eastman was the E20. That’s news to me about them discontinuing lots of their left-handed guitars. This is one thing I really respected about Eastman. They offered many left-handed models at no charge to the consumer as far as I could see. As a fellow lefty who just so happens to play right handed. I care about these kinds of things. One of the reasons I cannot get along with PRS guitars. Haha Keep your eyes peeled though on the used market as I’m sure a couple great ones will pop up from Eastman that could work for you Also, where are you located? I am in Canada, and there’s a local store close to me that stocks a lot of Eastman stuff. I know he has had a good amount of left-handed stock in before.
Ngā mihi nui (big ups) from Aotearoa New Zealand. And thanks. This model is my go-to if I want to fill a large room in amplified (whereas I use an SC13e if I plug in). I tune the hog down one step and it’ll even tolerate dropped “D” tuning. I’ve liked the mahogany so much ive commissioned a 19th century martin style parlour guitar in mahogany.
Hey! Cheers from Canada. I’m really glad to hear that you enjoyed the video so much and it’s cool to hear about the Martin guitars you’ve got going on! Sounds like a couple of very special instruments. I appreciate you watching the video and wish you continued success with your performances! P.S if that parlour Guitar hasn’t arrived yet I’m sure you are going to be in for a nice treat when it does. Speaking from the perspective of someone who has a great great parlor. I can’t tell you how much I love the one I own. It actually gets a lot of use, not only for recording and writing but also for gigging. This is coming from somebody who only played dreadnaughts live for many years when it came to acoustic shows. The parlour guitar was a game changer for me.
I really don't like sapele. It has a harsh bright tone to my ear.
Cool. Thanks for sharing. Have a good one.
Quite the improvement from the earlier mod if I recall correctly. It reminds me a little of what Charlie Hunter does with his fan-fret guitar, suggesting a warm bass mix with the lead guitar. This Brown Bear was the guitar I first saw you play with in 2016!! I was impressed then as I am now with that beast. On the opposite side, I picked up a Martin Backpacker for my camping trip last week that uses ultra-light strings and playing it is quite the adjustment, especially with a capo. Ever try those?
Hey my friend! I’m so sorry for missing this last week. Glad you like the mod. I’m having fun with the strings. Definitely a big improvement over what I had on the guitar before to achieve a similar effect, and I agree that it does a bit of that Charlie Hunter thing, though I’m such a huge fan of his that perhaps some of that was self-inflicted. :-) perhaps subconsciously self-inflicted. Haha. I remember trying a couple of those Martin backpacker guitars years ago. They are very cool! I ended up going for an applause backpacker style guitar made by ovation though instead when I was about 12 years old. Was a Christmas gift from my parents. I still have it in fact and played it last weekend when our family was up at a boat with another family. It’s great for those kinds of situations. I don’t recall that I’ve ever played ultra light acoustic strings., but whenever I try someone’s guitar with nine gauge electric strings, I feel the sensation you are speaking of. It’s odd to me as someone who generally favours slightly heavier strings, that may change in time though, so perhaps next time I restring my travel guitar. I should try some of those ultralight acoustic strings to see what they are like.
@@LucasHaneman An applause backpacker? That sounds interesting. My cousin had an Applause knock off of a strat back in the mid-80;s. I wonder if that would have been the same company. Light strings on the Martin Backpacker makes sense as the neck curvature had me shaving the saddle for better action. Such a convenient size instrument for outings as you mentioned!
I converted a cheap Strat copy to a Bass retaining the 25.5 scale. Used the thinner top 3 bass strings and a .38 wound regular wound guitar string as the high string. Even used one of the Strat pickups. Sounded and played great.
Wow! So cool. That’s really taking this to the extreme. Thanks for sharing. Sounds like an interesting guitar.
Interesting... Sounds good...
Thanks! Appreciate that
I came close to quitting guitar this week, so probably can’t assess it as a good one. I’m still unable to bring myself to play.
Don't give it up. It took me almost 50 years to get it right and it was worth it.
Hey man. I’m so sorry to hear that you’re going through this. It wouldn’t be easy. I hope you’re able to get your inspiration back. You’ve got some beautiful guitars and it sounds like you’re a great player. So keep your head up. At the end of the day, Music should be bringing joy, so I hope you’re able to get back to what counts in time. Fingers crossed buddy.
@@LucasHaneman Thanks man, I appreciate it. It’s been pretty rough for me lately and I struggle with imposter syndrome like crazy. ASD has some serious drawbacks to it sometimes. I have been dealing with massive burnout for months now also. I feel like a slug, and that doesn’t help much either.
🕶🕶❤️🕶🕶
Glad you liked it! Thanks so much for watching
I'd say yes. It sounds deeper and richer. What do you think, Lucas?
Personally I like it! I don’t have a standard baritone guitar to compare it to but for me it’s doing the job of what that type of guitar would do but it feels more familiar as it’s a normal-ish telecaster. Thanks a bunch for watching as always!
Very nice playing 🎉
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that
Awesome playing! This seems like a nice guitar and alternative to a 335. I find the addition of a master volume interesting. But this means it has 3 volume pots. Does the extra master volume sucks tone? Like cuts the high end as you turn the volume down? With modern wiring you already get that. So with the added master volume I wonder. Or is this 50's wiring?
beautiful playing Brother and use of the pedal. Thats what's most impressive to me.
That’s really nice of you! Thank you so much for checking out the video and I’m glad you enjoyed the playing.

@@LucasHaneman Wow. Suppose this shows how much we often hear with our eyes..
Exactly. Even though I don’t see very well myself I can see well enough to understand the visual appeal of guitars. That said for me it’s all about tone and feel first and foremost. Though I am intrigued by brand history etc. etc. with many companies the name on the head stock is pretty far down on my list when it comes to choosing guitars to gig with.. episodes like this are just trying to open peoples minds to this idea in a fun way
Just got one! Off the rack, the action was perfect. I tried a lot of the other PCH's and even an AC222CE. The PCH1-GACE just played better. I liked the PCH3 except for the gloss neck. Yes, you could notice more resonance/richness from the AC222CE but it was almost 2X more $.
Absolutely, they are fantastic! Glad you are liking yours
